Tracy Ryan, Liberty Mutual’s Chief Product Officer for its Commercial Insurance business unit, has been selected by Business Insurance magazine as one of its 2014 Women to Watch.

The annual feature profiles women executives who are doing outstanding work in leadership positions in commercial insurance, reinsurance, risk management, employee benefits and related fields. The publication’s editors review reader nominations and select 25 women using criteria that include recent professional achievements, influence on the marketplace, and contributions to the advancement of women in business.

Ms. Ryan leads Liberty Mutual’s commercial insurance product organization comprised of approximately 500 employees, responsible for product development, product pricing, and underwriting guidelines for workers compensation, commercial auto, general liability, excess casualty, commercial multi-peril and property. Ryan and her team work collaboratively with the business segments to define and drive strategies for each product, by segment, industry and state.

Under her leadership, sophisticated pricing models were developed and implemented into the underwriting process across all product lines and across all business segments (small, middle, national and specialty). This has resulted in a significant improvement in the adequacy of pricing and a dramatic improvement in the overall performance of the company’s $10 billion Commercial Insurance book.

“Like many strong leaders, Tracy sets challenging strategic goals, and what helps her achieve them is her strong relationships and her ability to collaborate effectively across all areas of our organization,” said J. Paul Condrin, president, Commercial Insurance. “Tracy also exhibits a sense of energy and personal commitment to everything she does that is inspirational to her team and peers.”

Recruiting and training are a top priority for Ryan and her leadership team. In 2012, she created the Product Management Development Program to recruit and train college hires as product analysts.

Ms. Ryan’s career with Liberty Mutual Insurance began in 1994. She was promoted to lead or chief actuary positions in several of the company’s business segments over the course of a decade. In 2005 she was promoted to General Manager for the UPS-dedicated account team. She was appointed Chief Product Officer, Commercial Markets (Middle, National & Specialty business segments) in 2010. Following an organizational realignment in 2012, Ms. Ryan was promoted to her current position, Chief Product Officer, Commercial Insurance (Small, Middle, National, Specialty business segments).
