Liberty ranked #111 out of 300 top companies in the country for women

Forbes magazine today published its America’s Best Employers for Women 2018 list and Liberty Mutual Insurance is proud to rank #111.  The 300 companies on the list were determined through a joint Statista/Forbes survey response collection and analysis of U.S. employee perceptions that was applied to a sample of 40,000 employees working for firms or institutions that employ 1,000 or more.  The sample included more than 25,000 women.

“This recognition from Forbes reinforces that the work we are doing to attract and retain employees from a wide range of backgrounds is paying off,” said Melanie Foley, Liberty Mutual Insurance Executive Vice President and Chief Talent & Enterprise Services Officer.  “By being open and engaging with all people and possibilities, and by offering them the benefits and flexible work environment they need to be successful in their personal and professional lives, we will continue to build the innovative culture needed to succeed in today’s global marketplace.”

Forbes’ survey was conducted using several online access panels, providing a representative sample of the U.S. workforce, and employees were asked to give their opinion on a series of statements surrounding atmosphere and development, image, working conditions, salary and wages, workplace and diversity with regard to their own employer.  The survey also focused on topics that are in general more relevant for women, asking women to rate their own employers on parental leave, family support, flexibility, discrimination, representation and career, and pay equity.

“The inclusion and advancement of women at all levels is critical to our ongoing success,” said Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer Dawn Frazier-Bohnert. “We celebrate the progress we’ve made. Though we have more work to do, this recognition acknowledges that we are on the right path and creates momentum for our ongoing efforts.”

To attract and retain the next generation of women leaders, Liberty Mutual has expanded existing programs while launching several new major initiatives, including:

  • Expanded paid parenting leave, short term disability and bereavement leave.  Paid parenting leave increased to eight weeks for all birth mothers, fathers and adoptive parents who have been at Liberty for at least 12 months. Additionally, short-term disability for child birth was expanded to eight weeks and paid at 100 percent regardless of employee tenure.
  • Held the Women in Technology Summit, an immersive three-day program for female students designed to empower, motivate, and celebrate women pursuing a career in tech. After the event, participants also had the opportunity to interview for our 2019 TechStart Summer Intern Program.
  • Organized the Men as Allies Summit that featured renowned speakers and leaders in gender collaboration, along with Liberty leaders. Recognizing that women's advancement is not just a woman's issue, we took a different approach by helping men understand that it was also in their best interest to join women in these efforts as allies. More than 450 male and female employees attended the event, which sparked further discussions and deepened interest in post-summit learning.
  • Participated in, and was presenting sponsor of, The Commonwealth Institute’s Women’s Leadership Development in Massachusetts 2018 Impact Study.  Results from the program of research will provide increased visibility about the importance of women’s leadership development and enable organizations to understand ways to enhance and improve their current offerings.

Liberty Mutual’s Diversity and Inclusion framework has five focus areas including Talent (attraction, advancement and retention), Development (building D&I capability), Workplace Environment, Customer and Community and at the framework’s core is Communications (D&I messaging and language). All parts of this model have to be working together for diversity and inclusion efforts to succeed.
