Pro Patria Award Recipients

BOSTON, Mass – Last night, Liberty Mutual Insurance was honored with the Massachusetts Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Pro Patria Award in the Large Business Category, which was presented by Earl Bonnett, Chair of the Massachusetts Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve and Francis Magurn, Brigadier General (Ret.) of the Massachusetts National Guard.  The highest level of award bestowed by an ESGR State Committee, the Pro Patria Award recognizes a company's extraordinary support for its Guard and Reserve employees through leadership and practices, including policies that enable employees to simultaneously manage a full-time civilian job and service to our country.

"It is an incredible honor to receive this recognition from the Massachusetts ESGR," said Liberty Mutual Chairman and CEO David H. Long.  "Through the work they do in the office and in service of our country, our veteran and military service member employees truly embody Liberty's purpose of giving people the security to embrace today and confidently pursue tomorrow.  We are proud to offer them a work environment in which they can thrive and one that offers the support they need when they are serving the nation."

The company was nominated by Nathan Perry, Senior Territory Manager for Liberty Mutual's Global Retail Markets who was inspired by the level of support he received while recently deployed.

Perry has served for 16 years, in both the enlisted and officer ranks, and has been mobilized for homeland security as part of Operation Noble Eagle and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. This last year he spent 12 months on military leave serving as part of NATO's Kosovo Force mission in the Balkans.

Perry explains why he nominated Liberty, "I have never felt so loved and supported by a civilian employer as I currently do working for Liberty Mutual. This company truly supports the United States Military and what it stands for.  Liberty Mutual has a culture of patriotism. This culture is realized through the caliber and actions of men and women that work at Liberty Mutual. Their actions demonstrate true patriotism and support. It is the actions of the individuals, encouraged by their employer, that have made the greatest impact. It is their emails, phones calls, public acknowledgements, letters, care packages, and support for my family back home. It is the creation of this culture manifested in these actions which earned the Pro Patria Award."

Liberty Mutual strongly supports the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve's (ESGR) mission to promote a culture in which employers encourage and value the employment and military service of members of the U.S. National Guard and Reserve.  The company also works with American Corporate Partners through which Liberty employees have mentored more than 200 veterans.  A key partner in this and all of Liberty's military initiatives is the employee resource group (ERG) Valor@Liberty, which seeks to engage and empower Liberty's military, veteran and ally community through building a strong internal network to foster personal and professional growth and support external initiatives and programs.  One of six ERGs at Liberty, Valor@Liberty works in conjunction with the company's Office of Diversity and Inclusion to create an environment where all employees can bring their whole selves to work.
