Kennedy, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Raytheon Company (seen on the right) in recognition of the company’s record 2018 safety performance and ongoing commitment to the health and safety of its 65,000 employees world-wide.

In recognition of Raytheon’s stellar employee safety performance in 2018 – which was the company’s safest in its 97-year history – Liberty Mutual Insurance recognized the defense contractor with its highest award for employee health and safety.

The prestigious “Risk Management Excellence” award, given at the discretion of the head of Liberty Mutual’s Risk Control operation, recognizes outstanding employee health and safety achievement by a company.  Liberty Mutual has awarded less than 20 such awards in its 100+ year history.

In 2018, Raytheon achieved its lowest Workplace Injury Rate, a broad measure recognized across the professional safety community.

“Beyond recognizing its incredible 2018 safety performance, the award acknowledges Raytheon’s sustained commitment to the health and safety of its more than 65,000 employees worldwide,” notes Jamie Merendino, Vice President & General Manager, Global Risk Solutions Risk Control, Liberty Mutual. “Perhaps this is most clearly seen in the evolution of its safety program.  Over the past few years, the company successfully moved from a more traditional approach focused on learning from the past, to a more proactive one based on active assessments and employee input.  Such a forward-looking approach is critical for a company to continue to improve an already strong safety performance.”

Raytheon, partnering with Liberty Mutual’s risk control professionals, developed a broad risk-based health and safety program, addressing many critical areas, including industrial hygiene; ergonomics; slip, trip, and fall prevention; fatality and serious injury prevention; and off-the-job safety.

An example illustrates the program’s focus on proactively identifying and mitigating potential sources of risk, and its success. Raytheon continually evaluates occupational disease risk in their operations and tracks results, including the mitigation of identified potential exposures.

To effectively manage this effort, Raytheon reached across the company to develop a cross-business team that meets monthly to review all elevated occupational disease risks and track progress mitigating those exposures.  In fact, due to the team’s dedication and hard work, by the end of 2018 it had already meet its 2020 goal of mitigating 95 percent of exposures.

“At Raytheon, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of workplace safety and employee health,” said Frank Jimenez, Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, Raytheon. “It is an absolute honor to receive Liberty Mutual’s highest health and safety award, which represents validation of all our hard work.”

Raytheon has been a Liberty Mutual commercial insurance policyholder for 90 years.
